Aljazeera, 9 August 2004PASOK —
"PASOK has done an enormous amount of work since Greece was awarded the Olympic Games. We have changed Greece, we have changed Athens. We have built tremendous infrastructure projects in transportation, airports, stadiums, the environment and telecommunications. This is a different Athens and we worked very hard to reach this point."
This is how the President of PASOK responded to a question reflecting on the seven years of preparation of the Olympics by PASOK administrations and the recent contribution toward this goal by Nea Demokratia. For Mr. Papandreou, the Olympic Games is a national issue. Whatever criticism is conducted internally is done so in the spirit of democracy.
On the Olympic Truce movement, Mr. Papandreou noted that "It is in effect a call to all sides to use the Olympic period in order to cease all violence. This call stands," noted the President of PASOK. "And as Vice Chairman of the Movement, I will help in any way possible all interested parties to take advantage of the opportunity."
In conclusion, addressing the viewers of Aljazeera, Mr. Papandreou noted the long and deep relations between Greece and the Arab world. "We support the dialogue between cultures," said the President of PASOK. "We wish only the best for the Arab people."
